 What's in your hat?

As part of the Presidents' study, Miss Heise read Abe Lincoln's Hat to the class.  The boys and girls learned that Abe carried important papers and documents in his black top hat.  The students wrote about what they would carry in their hats.  Their thoughts appear below and under the Writing Projects' tab.

First Grade Writing Projects

Since Monday was Grandparents' breakfast at school, the first graders wrote about why their Grandparents are special.  Enjoy their writings--they will make you laugh, cry, and smile all at the same time!

My Grandparents
My Grandparents take me to my cousins.  Grandpa likes to make sawdust.  I like Grandma to make cakes.  I have a Grandma selling a church.  –Jamie

My Grandparents live in the country.  I play on the bales.  I ride in the tractor.  She makes fried chicken.  My Grandparents are special.  –Trey

My Grandparents are special!  They work at McDonald’s.  My Grandpa works on the concrete.  My Grandparents are family.  My Grandparents kill mice.  –Anthony

My Grandparents are special!  They are special because they have a cat and they babysit my baby Landon.  Sometimes we go to my Grandparents.  I play with their cat.  I chase the cat around.  I sometimes eat lunch with them.  I use play dough at their house.  I have a sleepover at their house.-Tyler

My Grandparents are special!  They let me go to the park and they take me to the zoo.  They take me to the water park.  –Ashelyn

My Grandparents are special!  They are fun to go to!  My Grandma has sixteen cats.  My Grandpa doesn’t like that my Grandma has sixteen cats.  My Grandma takes us to the pumpkin patch every year.  I have a sleepover when my cousins are over.  –Carsan

My Grandparents are special!  They make me supper.  They let me ride my bike.  They play football with me.  They tell me to do the hay.  My Grandpa lets me ride in the tractor.  My Grandpa and I tease the cats.  I have ten bikes and Art has four bikes.  We feed the pigs and cows.  –Gabe

My Grandparents are special!  They farm.  Grandpa took me on a ride on the tractor the day before Grandpa Butch died.  I wish he would stay alive forever.  The day before Grandma Judy died I said, “I love you.” -Carson

My Grandparents are special!  They spoil me.  I had a Great Grandma.  They go fishing with me.  My Grandparents take me cat fishing.  My Grandpa plays checkers.  My Grandpa watches me ride four wheelers.  –Dakota

My Grandparents let me spend the night.  I feed the dogs.  I water the animals.  I get the eggs.  I get the sheep.  I shave the sheep.  I can sleep in their bed.   I go swimming.  I go to the store.  -Allan

We learned about quotation marks (also known as "talking marks" in Kindergarten.)  Each person completed the sentence:  My family....  The class wrote these on writing paper, illustrated the sentence, and shared with their classmates.
