SAVE THE DATE!

The date has been set for the Winside First Grade Living History Program!  Please mark your calendars!

If your child will be unable to attend, please let me know ASAP.  All parents, relatives, community members, friends, and friends of friends are invited!  A couple of weeks before the event, I will ask for the number of guests attending for your special first grader.  Numbers allow me to plan for the number of chairs and food to provide since we will enjoy light refreshments after the presentation.

See details below:

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

On the Tuesday after St. Patrick's Day the First Graders returned to their room to find a leprechaun shoe on the door and on the marker board tray.  Leprechaun stockings were draped from the ceiling fan.  What had happened?

Then the First Graders found gold and green beads strung from their chairs and a special green pen in their pencil tray.

Upon further investigation they discovered a message on the marker board!  Can you decipher it?

The boys and girls read the message from Pat the Leprechaun, put on their editing visors, and corrected all the errors.  See the finished product below.

The boys and girls posed with their special leprechaun beads, the leprechaun shoes, and colorful leprechaun stockings.

All in all, it was a GREAT Tuesday after St. Patrick's Day!

The Cat in the Hat Comes Back!

The First Graders had a super duper day celebrating Read Across America on March 2nd.  The Cat in the Hat returned for a special encore visit.  The boys and girls remembered his mementos stop last year.  Once again, he slowly crept into the classroom.  Of course, the best part was the book he read to the eager and excited Kindergarten and First Graders!  Guess what the title of the book was!  You're right--The Cat in the Hat Comes Back!  Special thanks to Alec Sindelar for his close connection to the Cat in the Hat.  Alec is a senior this year so he will be missed at Winside Elementary next year!  We wish this talented and creative student the best in his college education and career.

In addition to the annual Cat in the Hat appearance,  all elementary students were encouraged to wear their nighttime apparel like pajamas and slippers.  They could also bring along their favorite stuffed animal. "Nighty, Night!"

Here comes the Cat in the Hat!

Isn't he sneaky?

He did bring a book!  It's The Cat in the Hat Comes Back!

Mrs. Halpin, our para, reads to the boys and girls.

This is a really good part!

In preparation for making the green eggs and ham, the class read the recipe, learned about the term "a dozen", and gathered all the ingredients.

Looks pretty tasty!  This was placed on the document reader (Elmo) and then displayed on the white board in large screen format so everyone could see.  The Elmo is awesome!

The green eggs and ham are cooking!

Ms. Loetscher also brought 100% whole wheat buns for the boys and girls to enjoy with jelly.  Mrs. Topp (Wayne Co. UNL Extension Educator) emphasized the need for half of all grains in the diet to be whole grains.  All the boys and girls liked the taste and texture of this whole wheat.

Another endorsement for whole wheat bread!

Eating the green eggs and ham.

Mrs. Frahm made these delicious cookies for the ENTIRE elementary--a total of 12 dozen.  They were DELICIOUS! THANK YOU, MRS. FRAHM!
