Winside First Grade Super Bowl Game! Giants vs. the Patriots

As I was shopping in Wal-mart last Saturday afternoon, the store was crammed with people preparing for the big Super Bowl Game.  That got me thinking about how much fun it would be to recreate Sunday's upcoming game for the First Graders using math fact cards, green plastic tablecloths, and a few other props.  Now there was only one problem--I had never watched an entire Super Bowl game before!  In order for me to prepare for the First Grade version, I would need to carefully watch Sunday's game.  I must say I did really enjoy the game although I didn't understand all of it.

Mrs. Halpin (our afternoon para) and her husband constructed the goalposts from PVC pipe. Special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Halpin.  We used green plastic tablecloths, white duct tape, and markers to prepare the field.  Before we knew it, it was time for the National Anthem.  Of course, since all good athletes practice, practice, practice that is just what the First Graders did using math flashcards.

This was such a positive learning experience that I think we will need to make it an annual event!

Go team, go!

Kick-off!  The game begins as Mrs. Halpin flashes a card to the Patriots and they catch the ball by giving the correct sum to the addition problem.  They also earn an extra point by actually catching the nerf football.

The referee makes the call for the Giants.

Will the Patriots make the extra point?  Go, Patriots!

It is a close game!

Thanks to the scorekeeper for his great help!  (His daytime job is that of sixth grader Caleb Kampa.)

The game was so close that the Patriots called a time out!

We can do it, guys!

Final score was Patriots 29 and Giants 30.  Players shake hands with opposing team.

Of course, no Super Bowl Game would be complete without the Super Bowl party food!

Enjoying the after game goodies!

All in all, it was a great game, don't you think?

We can't wait for the next game! Learning the math facts this way is fantastic!  (Did we hear Ms. Loetscher say something about the Lakers?  She does know that's a basketball team, right?)

A Visit from Albert Einstein!

The First Graders were amazed to meet Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton.  The still photos tell the story of the experience.  Check out the next blog to see a video of Einstein and Newton in action!

Einstein deep in thought!

Hmm.... What effect does gravity have on the earth?

Isaac Newton (Alec Sindelar) and Einstein (Mr. Kravig?) work together to explain the effect of gravity on the universe.

Einstein and Isaac Newton visit the First Grade!

The First Graders enjoyed a visit from world famous scientists Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton.  Watch Einstein teach a lesson about gravity!

Hip-Hip-Hooray! The First Graders reach the 100th Day!

With great fan-fare the First Graders reached the 100th day of school on Tuesday, January 24th, 2012.  To commemorate this milestone the class celebrated with a Fun in the Sun theme.  They dressed in beach attire including sun glasses, shorts, sandals, and leis, lounged around on their beach towels, and worked on math even though it seemed more like play.  Put on your shorts, grab your sunglasses, bring a beach towel, and come along with us as we enjoy the 100th Day on the beach.  Oh, better bring some sunscreen, too!

Ready for a Day in the Sun!

Each First Grader had 100 pennies.  They attempted to make a tower 100 pennies tall.

Busy making 10 towers of 10--will that equal 100?

The 100 Count Limbo   Who will be the 100th person?

"I can do it!"

"I am ready--lower the bar!"

Mrs. Halpin prepares to break the Sunny Day pinata with the help of High School Aide Miss Elysia.

The boys and girls estimated the number of tootsie rolls that poured out of the sunny day pinata.  Guess what!  There were more than 100!  The class made one group of 100 which was ten groups of 10, 3 groups of ten, and 8 ones.  Wow, lots of place value and the yummy kind!  Look at the place value chart completed by this first grader.

Another exciting 100 day activity included the use of beach balls.  Each student had a partner, one beach ball, and one ice cream pail.  Each first grader had three tries to make a "basket" with the beach ball.  Then the partner did the same.  Together the pair completed an addition number sentence.  If partner one made 3 baskets and partner two made 2 baskets, the number sentence was:  3+2=5.  The boys and girls had a set number of minutes to do this.  After time was called they circled the sums and as a class we tabulated the totals.  Of course, we predicted whether or not the total number of baskets would be more or less than 100.  Drum Roll, please!  The total number of baskets:  171  WOW!  Do you know if that is an even or odd sum?

Are there 100 bites in this ice cream sandwich?  It was a delicious activity to find out.

The day ended with a beach feast of roasted hot dogs and potato chips.  Yummy!
