Craving a delicious, healthy snack? Read this blog!

Do you crave pizza tantalizing your taste buds but yet also yearn for a healthy snack that fuels your body?  Well, the first graders created just that treat!  And, as a bonus, it is easy to prepare (only 3 ingredients) and inexpensive! The boys and girls critiqued the pizza bites. This treat is low in sodium, no refined sugar, and includes healthy whole wheat. Protein from the dairy group and cereal from the grain group.  Best part is that the boys and girls thought it was delicious. They decided they could substitute different types of crackers for the shredded wheat.  Ms. Loetscher suggested half of a cherry tomato in place of the pizza sauce.  Let us know if you try this delectable snack and if you make any substitutions.  Happy snacking!

Quick Pizza Bites
  • Spoon sized shredded wheat
  • Quick Ragu pizza sauce
  • String mozzarella sticks

Ingredients:  Ragu quick pizza sauce, string mozzarella cheese, and spoon size shredded wheat

Cut string cheese into circles.
Spoon pizza sauce on shredded wheat piece.  Place string cheese circle on top.  Some creative first grade chefs also placed a dollop of pizza sauce on top of the string cheese.

Place in the microwave for 30 seconds.

Bon Appetit!

(The First Graders were a bit confused when they returned to school  on Wednesday to learn that President Obama had won the national election! A interesting discussion followed.)

Special thanks to the Sixth Grade and Mr. Erbst for setting up this special experience for the boys and girls!
