With great fan-fare the First Graders reached the 100th day of school on Tuesday, January 24th, 2012. To commemorate this milestone the class celebrated with a
Fun in the Sun theme. They dressed in beach attire including sun glasses, shorts, sandals, and leis, lounged around on their beach towels, and worked on math even though it seemed more like play. Put on your shorts, grab your sunglasses, bring a beach towel, and come along with us as we enjoy the 100th Day on the beach. Oh, better bring some sunscreen, too!

The boys and girls estimated the number of tootsie rolls that poured out of the sunny day pinata. Guess what! There were more than 100! The class made one group of 100 which was ten groups of 10, 3 groups of ten, and 8 ones. Wow, lots of place value and the yummy kind! Look at the place value chart completed by this first grader.
Another exciting 100 day activity included the use of beach balls. Each student had a partner, one beach ball, and one ice cream pail. Each first grader had three tries to make a "basket" with the beach ball. Then the partner did the same. Together the pair completed an addition number sentence. If partner one made 3 baskets and partner two made 2 baskets, the number sentence was: 3+2=5. The boys and girls had a set number of minutes to do this. After time was called they circled the sums and as a class we tabulated the totals. Of course, we predicted whether or not the total number of baskets would be more or less than 100. Drum Roll, please! The total number of baskets: 171 WOW! Do you know if that is an even or odd sum?

Are there 100 bites in this ice cream sandwich? It was a delicious activity to find out.
The day ended with a beach feast of roasted hot dogs and potato chips. Yummy!
